Jim Burns
Networks are useless to people. The application is everything. Jim is passionate about securely network-enabling every machine and enhancing people’s lifestyles in the process. He has spent more than a decade connecting machines to the network always balancing security with ease-of-use.
Prior to Elbrys Jim worked at Cisco enabling mobile security and application of Wi-Fi and VPN technology to provide information services to user’s securely and seamlessly. He actively participated and edited sections of the IEEE 802.1X specification. His work at Cisco culminated in a ideas and patents that focused on seamless connectivity based on an end-user’s application usage. This work has matured to the newly released Passpoint program from the Wi-Fi Alliance.
At Elbrys Jim continues the work of seamless and secure connectivity of devices, extending it beyond Wi-Fi to other wireless mediums and new headless and low power devices. As the internet of things matures the greatest barrier to wide adoption is connecting the devices to the network. Jim is currently focused on managed services to make this process invisible to the consumer while providing greater security and mobility to the consumer. This is aided by his roles as vice-chair of the Healthcare marketing task group at Wi-Fi Alliance, technical editor for the Smart Energy task group at the Wi-Fi Alliance and vice-chair of the Consortium for Smart Energy Profile Interoperability (CSEP).
Outside work Jim enjoys working at seasonal timescales; experimenting with his garden. He is also an avid board and card game player and has developed several Games 100 award winning titles while at the now hibernating company Eight Foot Llama.
