This paper will discuss the challenge of designing behavioral change programs to initiate and sustain engagement, some of the reasons such programs may under perform, and important elements that should be considered when implementing new, or optimizing existing programs. We will look at the links between individual motivation levels, targeted rewards, and the gaming paradigm, within the conceptual framework of Self-Determination Theory (SDT) developed by Edward Deci and Richard Ryan [1]. While the principles set forth should apply to almost any behavioral change program, the primary context under consideration will be programs to increase physical activity in order to help combat the obesity problem and mitigate other health risks associated with sedentary lifestyles.
